Dublin, Exhibition Palace, Arts, Industries and Manufactures (and Loan Museum of Works of Art), 1872.
John Butts, who was from Cork, was a pupil of the relatively unknown landscape painter Rogers, and practised for several years in his native city before moving to Dublin in 1757, where he worked predominantly as a scene painter. Butts died young, aged only 37, and relatively few works by him are known. A comparable painting by the artist dating from circa 1760 and entitled Poachers: View in the Dargle is in the Tate Britain, London (68.6 by 89.9cm.; inv. no. T01815).
We are grateful to William Laffan for endorsing the attribution to John Butts following inspection of digital images.
