Watercolour over pencil

227 by 249 mm

Sudbury, Gainsborough's House, A Peculiarly English Art, English Drawings and Watercolours, 1994, no. 8
This watercolour dates to circa 1804 and is a rare example of Cox working in London. He looks across the Thames at Southwark to the 'German' Steel Yard, an area that had acted as the main trading base of the Hanseatic League in England since medieval times. In 1852, the site was sold to the South Eastern Railway. They demolished the buildings and, in 1866, Cannon Street Station was opened.
