Jan Pištěk is an important figure in the generation of contemporary Czech artists who came to prominence at the start of the 1990s. His characteristic painting style, which evolved through many stages, has attained a harmonious overlap of the realistic and the abstract expressions and a unique symbiosis of reality and fiction. In his work he gradually departed from traditional painting techniques and developed his own personal style, combining non-traditional processes and materials. By pouring colour layers, inserting small objects into his paintings, and by printing or transferring projected pictures he has arrived at a unique, visually attractive artistic self-expression, whose appeal stems from the ever-present association of multiple meanings which stimulate the viewer’s imagination.
