Profile of a Bearded Man is an intense and intimate character study by an unknown hand. The figure in this work appears to depict the same model as that of Pindar in The Apotheosis of Homer (Musée du Louvre, Paris), Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’ iconic 1826 work. A Greek lyric poet, Pindar is visible on the right of Homer, dressed in white and presenting his lyre to the deified poet. While Ingres painted many studies for The Apotheosis of Homer, including Pindar and Ictinus in the National Gallery in London, his studio, which included accomplished artists such as Théodore Chassériau, Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin, Henri Lehmann, and Eugène Emmanuel Amaury-Duval , participated extensively in the creation of his full scale works.
