Acquired at the above sale

The son of sculptor Jean-Baptiste Moreau, Hippolyte-François Moreau studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under François Jouffroy. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1863, and won medals for his work at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1878 and in 1900. His 1880 sculpture of the mathematician Alexis Clairaut decorates the façade of the Hotel de Ville in Paris.

Moreau was known for his sculptures of young women and Hébé, the goddess of youth, serves as the perfect subject to demonstrate his skill at depicting the voluminous curves and supple skin of his models.
