Girl Weeping

signed and dated: Achille Casoni / 1880 Carrara

white marble

100cm., 39 3/8 in.

Several sculptors with the surname Casoni were active in Carrara in the 19th century, including Baldassarre, Bernardo, and Eugenio. While Achille Casoni does not seem to be recorded in the literature, he is likely to have been a member of the same dynasty.

The present marble is a beautiful example of Italian genre sculpture. Its sensitive subject of a girl weeping and holding what appears to be a letter is likely to have been inspired by a literary source.
