The Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 3998 had a long production life. It was indeed introduced in 1989 and available in yellow, rose, white gold and platinum until the reference was discontinued in 2005. The model has seen several improvements over its 17-year tenure, initially encasing the calibre 310 SC within the first series of production, spanning from 1989 to 1993. The second series would be produced until 1996 and rely on the new calibre 315 SC 130 before the third series introduced the latest evolution of the same calibre.
The present very rare example is part of a limited edition of 150 pink gold only pieces delivered in 1993 to Garrard, a London long-term retailer, to celebrate their 150th anniversary. The specific Stern Créations pink dial is elegantly adorned with matching gold Breguet numerals and unique pink gold hands, immediately associating the 3998’s aesthetics to the rich Calatrava lineage.
Its two-piece 33mm pink gold case was manufactured by Ateliers Réunis, a Geneva-based casemaker. It furthermore encases the then newly introduced calibre 315 SC (130) which is displayed through a see-through caseback personalised for Garrard.
According to literature, only a mere dozen of the 150 pieces have come back to the market so far. The present collectible wristwatch stands in attractive condition and is offered with an Extract from the Archives, confirming the date of sale on October 27, 1993.
