This picture was the artist's contribution to the Artists War Fund sale, which raised £12,200 for survivors and widows of the Boer War. Among the three-hundred contributions were John William Waterhouse's Destiny (Townley Hall Art Gallery and Museum, Burnley) and Frank Dicksee's Stella (sold in these rooms 14 July 2016, lot 18).
