A self-taught painter, the Belgian artist Félix Labisse was never officially part of the Parisian Surrealist group though his mature practice was heavily influenced by its output and its ideas, and he exhibited in group shows devoted to Surrealism with André Masson, Max Ernst, Raymond Queneau and André Breton after he settled in Paris in 1932. Labisse renders his poetic reveries in a Surrealist style, especially focusing on the female figure, which recurs as a central motif through his oeuvre and is typically characterized as combinations of the alluringly sensual, distant and unemotional.
This work is a study related to Alfred Jarry's science fiction novel Le Surmâle.
