The sitter supported the claim of William and Mary to the English throne, for which he was created Baron Cholmondeley. In 1706 he was appointed to the Privy Council and further ennobled with the titles Viscount Malpas and Earl of Cholmondeley. Under Queen Anne he was Treasurer of the Household, a position he continued to hold under George I.
