The sitter was Minister of Foreign Affairs under Louis XIV between 1699 and 1715. A man of great intellectual brilliance, the king intended to appoint Colbert his Secretary of State. However, the monarch died in 1715 and the Regent, Philippe, Duke of Orleans, deprived Colbert of any political power.
