The treatise on fencing by Selden was one of several published in the early seventeenth century. Sir Francis Bacon was appointed attorney-general in 1613 and one of his tasks was to abolish duelling; he soon prosecuted two men in the Star Chamber in order to discourage the practice, publishing this work in order to publicise the trial.
