DIRECTIONS FOR MUSTERS

[Directions for musters: Wherein is shevved the order of drilling for the musket and pike. Set forth in postures, with the words of command, and brief instructions for the right use of the same. Cambridge: T. Buck and R. Daniel, 1638]


4to (186 x 150mm.), 21 plates, some coloured by hand, contemporary wrappers with ink illustrations of William and Mary, the Royal Arms and various scribblings and signatures, lacking frontispiece, title-page and three other leaves at the beginning


The plates here are derived from Jacob de Gheyn’s Wapen-handelinghe van roers, musquetten en spiessen (lot 218). "An instructive little book, the text containing a concise account of the organization of the Trained Bands, the members of which, chosen from the gentry and yeomanry, served as a Body Guard to the King, or in case of invasion" (Cockle).
