[SHUTTLE DISCOVERY (STS-26)]

DISCOVERY POISED FOR LAUNCH ON PAD 39A. 15 AUGUST 1988.

Vintage NASA chromogenic color photograph, 10 by 8 inches, “This Paper Manufactured by Kodak” watermark, press captions printed in purple to verso, NASA image ID “KSC-388C-2909/1”; minor toning.

Space Shuttle Discovery was secured on Launch Pad 39A after a nearly 7 hour journey on the crawlerway. While carrying the shuttle, the crawler's maximum speed was a little more than one mile per hour.

STS-26 was the 26th NASA Space Shuttle mission, and the seventh flight of the orbiter Discovery. The mission launched from Kennedy Space Center on 29 September 1988, and was deemed the "Return to Flight" mission, being the first following the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster of 28 January 1986. Discovery safely touched down four days later.
