[APOLLO 9]

THE LUNAR MODULE VIEWED FROM THE COMMAND MODULE. MARCH 1969.

Vintage NASA “Red Number” chromogenic color photograph, 10 by 8 inches, “A Kodak Paper” watermark to verso. NASA image ID “NASA AS9-21-3244” printed in upper left margin in red; minor toning.

On 7 March, one of the most important events of the Apollo 9 mission took place: the separation and rendezvous of the Lunar Module and the Command Module. At this point in the Apollo program, the LM lacked the capability to return the astronauts to Earth, making this the first time space travelers had flown in a vehicle that could not take them home.
