Description

The Vintage NASA Photo Collection of Philip Kulpa

[APOLLO 16]

COMMANDER JOHN YOUNG COLLECTING LUNAR SAMPLES. 23 APRIL 1972.

Vintage NASA “Red Number” chromogenic color photograph, 10 by 8 inches, “A Kodak Paper” watermark to verso. NASA image ID “NASA AS16-117-18825” printed in upper left margin in red; minor toning.

Taken by LMP Charlie Duke, the present image shows Commander John Young with a sample bag in his left hand, moving toward the bottom part of the gnomon while collecting samples at the North Ray Crater geological site. Of particular note in this photograph is the degree to which Young's Extravehicular Mobility Unit (or spacesuit) is soiled during this third and final Apollo 16 EVA.
