Description

The Vintage NASA Photo Collection of Philip Kulpa

[APOLLO 14]

LM ASCENT STAGE LIFTING OFF FROM THE LUNAR SURFACE. 6 FEBRUARY 1971.

Vintage NASA “Red Number” chromogenic color photograph, 10 by 8 inches, “A Kodak Paper” watermark, press captions printed in purple to verso. NASA image ID “NASA S-71-19500” printed in upper left margin in red; minor toning, two small pieces of tape to upper margin.

The present image captures the Apollo 14 lunar module ascent stage as it lifted off the lunar surface. Wind from the powerful LM engine caused gold-colored foil to scatter and cover the LM, and disrupted the United States flag.
