Description

[APOLLO 14]

EDGAR MITCHELL USING A "THUMPER" ON THE LUNAR SURFACE. 31 JANUARY - 9 FEBRUARY 1971.

Vintage NASA “Red Number” chromogenic print, 10 by 8 inches, “A Kodak Paper” watermark, typed press captions taped to verso. NASA image ID “NASA AS14-67-9374” printed in upper left margin in red; minor toning, tape and a few spots to verso.

INSCRIBED and SIGNED by EDGAR MITCHELL: "USING A "'HUMPER' TO TAKE SEISMIC | READINGS | EDGAR MITCHELL"

In the present image Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell is operating a hand-held "thumper" as he walks back toward the ALSEP central station. As Mitchell moved outward, deploying the geophones, his left boot sank into the soft deposits of the crater rim, but his right boot barely left a trace in the undisturbed surface layer.
