Nikolai Yukhnevich pursued a career as a doctor and lecturer at Odessa Medical Institute whilst simultaneously taking an active part in the local artistic community. As a member of the Odessan Society of Independent Artists he participated in a number of exhibitions. Yukhnevich’s close friend and fellow artist Amshey Nurenberg wrote of him: ‘In the line of doctor-painters one must also mention Nikolai Yukhnevich – a former member of the Independents society. Yukhnevich is a great and subtle artist. He paints portraits, landscapes and still lifes. His pastels testify to a high artistic culture and developed taste.’ (A.Nurenberg, ‘Professora meditsiny – khudozhniki’, 2007) Given the strong resemblance to the artist in a surviving photograph, this work is very likely a self-portrait.
