Hieronymus van Slingelandt was a governor of the town theatre in Amsterdam and was responsible for the stage productions from 1820 onward. Pfeiffer designed sets for various operas, ballets and plays.
Van Slingelandt owned a model of the theatre, for which Pfeiffer made six 'background' decorations. It appears that the present drawing is listed in van Slingelandt’s inventory of the miniature stage, paintings and drawings made after his death in 1845, “Vier grote dito [Teekeningen], Ruïnes, door denzelfden [F.J. Pfeiffer] dfl 60,-.'
