The gentile scene of card players is reminiscent of the engravings of Jean-Michel Moreau and his school. By family tradition it is thought to represent Joannes de Mol, the founder of the Oud-Loosdrecht factory. The terrace recedes into a formal garden and the town in the background is believed to represent Loosdrecht. The quality of the painting and the intimate nature of the subject suggests a personal gift to an important patron.  For such an item one would expect one of the factory's leading decorators, perhaps Fiddelle Duvivier to be entrusted with its execution.
