A toverlantaarn, also known as a magic lantern or laterna magica can be considered as the ancestor of the slide projector. The invention of the magic lantern is said to originate from the Netherlands and finds its origins with the important Dutch mathematician, physicist and astronomer Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695) in the mid-17th century.
