This animated musical fantasy was inspired by the song Yellow Submarine by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The animation features songs by The Beatles. The Beatles appear as animated characters in the film, with their voices being done by other actors, until the final scene, when their real voices are used.

The Beatles made a total of four films, this being their most famous. Original British posters for this film are highly sought-after. Heinz Edelmann was a German illustrator and designer, and is most celebrated for his art direction and character designs for this animated film.
