12mo. Adds dated April, 1864. Clean and unspotted. Original textured purple cloth, covers stamped in blind with central wreath motif; faded. Chemise and slipcase.


First edition. One of Thoreau's "excursion books," the present volume contains the essays "Ktaadn," "Chesuncook," and "The Allegash and East Branch." Additionally, it includes a brief appendix that contains Thoreau's notes on the varieties of plants and animals one might encounter in the Maine woods, as well as some suggestions about proper attire for the region, and a helpful glossary of Native American phrases.
