This scene is taken from the Old Testament, Exodus 2:16–22. In this work it is possible to discern the influence on Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp, father of Aelbert Cuyp, of the pre-Rembrandtist artists such as Claes Moyaert. The date on the well has also been read as 1635.
