William, Count of Schaumburg-Lippe, is an important military figure in German history. He was a commander of some repute who gained a reputation as a particularly fine military theorist and defensive tactician. He fought throughout the Seven Years' War, and in 1762 led allied troops into Portugal, countering the Spanish invasion. He is commemorated in a bust in the Walhalla Temple in Bavaria, the 'hall of fame' of important figures in Germany's history.
