Acquired from the artist by Edward Fox White.

D. Linnell, Blake, Palmer, Linnell and Co.: The Life of John Linnell, Leicester 1994, p. 372.

Linnell began The Cattle Pond on 28 September 1873 and worked on it again during October. He finished the painting in January 1874. On one of his regular visits to Redhill the following month, Edward Fox White saw the picture and agreed to buy it. Linnell's journal entry for 8 February 1874 reads 'Mr White agreed for the purchase of 4 kitcats viz Cattle pond, Cloud, Sand Pits & Cornfield'. The present composition appears to relate to a drawing on p. 190 of Linnell's sketch book.
