This high-quality pair of portraits was formerly attributed to Gerrit Lundens, due to S.J. Gudlaugsson's reading of the monogram as 'GL', when the works appeared in Frans C. Butôt's posthumous sale in 1993. The works are, however, convincingly attributable to Dirck van der Lisse, whose monogram reads 'DVL', and with whose small oval portraits on copper in the Royal Collection (also signed 'DVL'),1 and the Fondation Custodia, Paris,2 they may be favourably compared.
