Description
Bronzes from the Robert Mayer Collection, Vienna
AFTER SEVERO CALZETTA DA RAVENNA (ACTIVE CIRCA 1496-1543)
ITALIAN, PROBABLY PADUA, SECOND HALF 16TH CENTURY
KNEELING SATYR
bronze, on a serpentine marble base
bronze: 18.2cm., 7⅛in.
base: 5cm., 2in.
Robert Rudolf Theodor Mayer (1874-1974), Vienna;
thence by descent to the present owner
The present bronze forms a mirror-image of Severo da Ravenna's famous Kneeling Satyr, which was cast by his workshop in numerous variants. Riccio's and Severo's models were adapted freely by later Paduan bronze founders, primarily for utilitarian objects. The rather soft modelling of the present figure's face and anatomy suggests such a later dating.
