AUGUSTE JEAN-BAPTISTE VINCHON

Paris 1789- 1855 Bad Ems

A PERGOLA

oil on paper, laid down on canvas

canvas: 9 by 6⅜ in.; 22.9 by 16.2 cm.

framed: 13¼ by 10¾ in.; 33.7 by 27.3 cm.

With Simon Dickinson Inc, New York;

Where acquired by the present collector circa 1999.

Rome and The Campagna: Oil sketches by Auguste Jean-Baptiste Vinchon and other French artists, exhibition catalogue, New York 1999, pp. 14-5, cat. no. 10, reproduced.

New York, Dickinson Roundell, Rome and The Campagna: Oil sketches by Auguste Jean-Baptiste Vinchon and other French artists, 6 May - 3 June 1999, no. 10.

Although the location depicted in this painting is unknown, it is likely the same venue depicted in C.W. Eckersberg's En pergola in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen (inv. no. KMS2059). Vinchon's fascination with light and penchant for dramatic effects is heightened in this scene where the deep green hues of the vines are balanced by the bright blue hues of the sky.
