Description

JACOPO PALMA, CALLED PALMA IL GIOVANE

Venice 1548 - 1628

A SHEET OF STUDIES AFTER TINTORETTO, INCLUDING THE TEMPTATION OF ADAM AND EVE

Pen and brown ink and wash, over traces of black chalk

241 by 191 mm; 9½ by 7½ in

The two central groupings on this sheet are both drawn from paintings by Jacopo Tintoretto depicting Adam and Eve before God1 and The Temptation of Adam and Eve,2 today in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence and the Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice, respectively.

We know from various sources that Palma began his artistic career copying, while still very young, the Martyrdom of St. Lawrence by Titian in the Church of the Gesuiti, and during subsequent stays at Pesaro, Urbino and Rome he copied works by Raphael, Michelangelo and Polidoro.

Very few drawings by Palma of this type have survived, although another sheet, also after Tintoretto, was previously in the collection of Mr. C.R. Rudolf.3
