As noted in the Middlebury College catalogue (see Exhibited), Dr. Viale Ferrero considers this drawing to be for Scene VII of the opera Teodosio il Giovane, first performed in the Teatro Ottoboni, in Rome, in 1711. In Juvarra’s finished drawing for the set, in the collection of the Biblioteca Nazionale, Turin,1 as well as the engraving made from it, the composition has already been altered through the re-positioning of the equestrian monument and the redesigning of the arch.
