This finely finished watercolour dates to 1856 and is the most complete surviving preliminary study for Arthur Hughes’s important early painting: Home from Sea, a work that he painted between 1856 and 1862, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1863 and which is now housed at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The watercolour depicts the parish church of All Saints at Chingford in Essex. Painted on the spot and in meticulous detail, the work illustrates Hughes’s early adherence to the techniques of Pre-Raphaelitism.
