STUDIO OF GIOVANNI ANTONIO CANAL, CALLED CANALETTO | RIVA DEGLI SCHIAVONI LOOKING EAST, WITH THE COLUMN OF ST. MARK TO THE LEFT

This is a studio version of a painting by Canaletto formerly owned by the Villiers family, later Earls of Jersey, and last known in a Belgian private collection. The Canaletto can be dated to circa 1730 and this version must have been completed by 1736. Other variants of the composition, with differently positioned figures and boats, are in the Egerton Collection at Tatton Park and at the National Gallery in London.
