Audemars Piguet launched the famous Royal Oak in the early 1970s, revolutionizing the luxury watch industry in the face of the quartz crisis. Gérald Genta designed this iconic shape, inspired by a diving-suit helmet, to feature a fully integrated bracelet: a first of its kind.
While the first stainless steel models were divided into four alpha-numerical series from A-D, the yellow gold and two toned versions were first launched around 1979 and were numbered simply from one. To the best of our research, less than 750 examples were produced in yellow gold, making the present lot among the first produced in this configuration.
