JOAN MIRÓ
1893 - 1983
FEMME ET CHIEN DEVANT LA LUNE (DUPIN 18)
Pochoir printed in colors, 1936, signed in pencil, dated '1935' and numbered 10/60, on wove paper, published by Adlan, Barcelona, and with their inkstamp on the verso, framed
image approx.: 500 by 450 mm 19¾ by 17¾ in
sheet: 650 by 500 mm 25⅝ by 19¾ in
As a seasoned painter, Miró naturally took to pochoir, a painterly stencil process that is easily mistaken for gouache. The present lot is one of his initial and most successful attempts at the medium. The cosmic shapes and curvilinear lines that comprise the grotesque Femme et Chien Devant La Lune best demonstrate the organic symbols that would become the core of his poetic printed oeuvre.
