Nicholas Stogdon has noted that “this may in fact be the first lithograph Degas made, and it appears to be the only one drawn directly on to a stone.” Evocative of many important late 19th c. images, it most likely was the inspiration for Toulouse-Lautrec’s color lithograph published in L’Estampe Originale in 1894.
