Description
A CLUTCH OF SAUROPOD EGGS
HAUT VAR, PROVENCE, FRANCE
Hypselosaurus priscus, (60 x 38 cm, in matrix), Maastrichtian, Late Cretaceous (circa 72.1-66 million years ago). A beautiful specimen presented on a custom wooden base.
The first discovery of dinosaur eggs to be scientifically documented occurred in the South of France by an amateur naturalist and Catholic priest, Father Jean-Jacques Pouech, though at the time, he thought the eggs to have been those of a giant bird. It was not until the 20th century that these eggs were correctly identified as having been those of a dinosaur. Sauropods were quadruped dinosaurs characterized by a tiny head perched at the end of a tremendously long neck, balanced by an equally long tail. These herbivores were the largest of all dinosaurs, and indeed, the largest of all land animals to have ever lived.
