Description

The Property of a Gentleman

TENNYSON, ALFRED, LORD

Maud and Other Poems. London: Edward Moxon, 1850

8vo (4 1/8 x 6 1/2 in.; 108 x 170 mm). Publisher's advertisements bound in at front, half-title signed by George Meredith, publisher's advertisement at end; one or two stray spots. Original full green cloth, covers ruled and decoratively stamped in blind, spine gilt lettered, yellow coated endpapers; corners just rubbed, spine lightly sunned, just cocked. In custom quarter green linen over marbled board clamshell case.

First edition, second issue, George Meredith's copy

Meredith—a Victorian novelist and poet so revered, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature no fewer than seven times—was greatly influenced by the work of Tennyson. In turn, is would seem that Tennyson held a deep admiration for the work of his contemporary, once stating that he wished he himself might have written Meredith’s “Love in a Valley."

An important association copy, connecting two of Victorian Britain's most significant literary figures
