Description

THE BEATLES

A collection of material relating to the Star-Club in hamburg, comprising:

(i) The Beatles, studio photograph, 215 x 165mm, full length, late 1964, with "Beatles" signatures probably in the hand of Neil Aspinall; (ii) Paul McCartney, brief autograph note, an IOU of 10 DM "To Ali" with a sketch and note on the verso ("If you gotta make a fool of somebody"), [1962]; (iii) The Beatles, two telegrams, to Manfred Weissleder, 13 April and 26 June 1966; (iv) Stuart Sutcliffe, small photographic portrait (42 x 27mm), head and shoulders, attached with adhesive tape to a sheet of Astrid Kirchherr's headed stationery; (v) The Beatles, 43 photographs including three negatives and one slide, one with copy signatures, various sizes, most with captions or stamps (including Astrid Kirchherr and others) on the reverse, 1960s; (vi) signed photograph of Little Richard ("God bless you always...") and The Searchers ("To Manfred..."), with three additional promotional photographs; (vii) "The Birth of the Beatles", screenplay by John Kurland, dated 17 May 1979, affected by damp; (viii) a group of 21 vinyl records by The Beatles (five 45rpm and 16 LPs), in sleeves

The signed photograph (item i) was evidently signed at the same session as lot 175 but was not used for reproduction, presumably because McCartney's hurried signature is mis-shapen and runs off the edge of the photograph.

The brief note by Paul (item ii) gives the name of a 1961 James Ray song ‘If you gotta make a fool of someone’, which The Beatles included in their live performances in 1962. The identity of ‘Ali’, who was owed 10 DM by Paul, is not known.

PROVENANCE:

Manfred Weissleder; thence by descent
