[POTTER, BEATRIX]

Two volumes from the library of Beatrix Potter, comprising:

Wedgwood, Julia. John Wesley… Macmillan and Co., 1870, first edition, ownership inscription (“H.B. Potter | Hill Top Farm | Sawrey”) on reverse of front free endpaper, bookplate of Beatrix Potter’s grandfather (“Edmund Potter, | Camfield Place.”) on front free endpaper, 42pp. publisher’s catalogue at end, original cloth, some light spotting, extremities slightly rubbed, hinges splitting--Tennyson, Alfred. A Selection from the Works… Strahan and Co., 1869, first edition, bookplate of Beatrix Potter’s father (“Rupert Potter.”) on front fixed endpaper, frontispiece and other illustrations within the text, original green morocco gilt, slightly rubbed, tear to foot of spine

The Tennyson has a note “Bought from Capt Duke at Castle Cottage…” and is signed HVW. It is assumed this is the eccentric Lakeland bookdealer H.V. Wilkinson. George Locke recalled a visit to Wilkinson’s “legendary bookshop” in the Bookdealer for 11 January 1996. Locke noted “…all the local booksellers warned me that I would never get in as he did not like visitors. However he seemed quite jovial when I arrived, so I selected one or two books from the shelves and then he threw me out…”
