Description

NELSON, HORATIO LORD

Autograph letter signed ("Nelson & Bronte"), to Emma Hamilton,

agreeing with her resolve to postpone celebrations until they are together ("You are right no champagne 'till we can crack a bottle together..."), also sending congratulations to the Prince of Castelcicala (the new Neapolitan Ambassador to London) and from Admiral Lutwidge and family, 1 page, 4to, integral address leaf with remains of black wax seal, postal markings, "Just anchored", [HMS Amazon], Deal, 4 October 1801, remains of adhesive, slightly marked, seal tear not affecting text

A CHARMING NOTE TO EMMA LOOKING FORWARD TO THEIR REUNION. Nelson and Emma Hamilton had more than one reason to celebrate when Nelson penned this note: the Peace of Amiens had been signed with France on 29 September, and Emma was just about to move into their new home together, Merton Place in Sussex. Nelson was impatient to be ashore and had written two days earlier with his hope that "you will forever love Merton", but - given his words here - Emma must have written to advise patience. Emma's caution was well-founded as Nelson was not given leave until 23 October, so had to remain with his ship in Deal in a mood of increasing frustration - as can be seen in intemperate letter to Emma written six days after the current letter (sold in these rooms, 9 July 2018, lot 310).
