Description

GANDHI, MOHANDAS K.

Series of seven letters, notes and cards, to Jamnabehn

two autograph letters (one written with his left hand), two autograph notes, and three letters unsigned but with autograph subscriptions in pencil ("Blessings"), discussing subjects including his own health and diet, requests for fruit to be sent to the Ashram, with advice and admonitions for members of Jamnabehn's circle in Bombay, one letter mentioning his plan to visit Bombay almost certainly for the centenary of the birth of Dadabhai Naijori, in Gujarati, altogether 9 pages, various sizes, Sabarmati Ashram, [September 1925]-31 January 1932, browning, some letters weak at folds, one note with burn-mark

...Was it not [Dadabhai Naoroji] who first introduced us to the problem of the deep poverty of the masses? In discovering the growing poverty of the masses Dadabhai put his finger upon the root evil of the present system of Government. In my opinion, therefore, the best way we can celebrate the forthcoming Centenary is to do something tangible for dealing with the problem of poverty... (Gandhi on the centenary of the birth of Dadabhai Naojori, Bombay Chronicle, 4 September 1925)

Gandhi used the centenary of the birth of the "Grand Old Man of India" to call for the universal adoption of the charkha. Jamnabehn, a member of the extended Gandhi clan, was an active weaver of khadi on the charkha and worked alongside Dadabhai Naroji's own grandchildren Perin Ben Captain and Khrushed Behn. These letters appear to be unpublished.
