KING EDWARD VI

Letter signed, at the head (“Edward”), to Sir William Paget and Viscount Hereford as Lords Lieutenant of Staffordshire,


additionally signed at the foot by Lord Protector Somerset and six other members of the Regency Council, including the Earls of Bedford and Shrewsbury, Sir John Thynne, Sir Anthony Wingfield, and William Herbert, informing them that because of the imminent arrival of a French diplomatic mission led by the Maréchal St. André the King has "sent for divers of our nobles and other gentlemen out of all the partes of our Realme t’attend uppon us for the more honourable …. of our court and the better interteigment of the said marshall and his trayne”, and therefore advising Paget to “be the more vigilant and carefull in the loking to your charge" so that "no noveltye not disorder" occurs during the absence of nobles from their counties, 1 page, oblong folio, integral address panel, papered seal, Greenwich, 30 June 1551, docketed, light staining, weak at folds


Jacques d'Albon, Seigneur de Saint-André (c. 1505-1562) was a leading figure in the court of King Henri II. He visited the England in July 1551 in order to bestow the Order of St Michel on the young King Edward. More importantly, the visit was an opportunity to negotiate terms for Edward’s marriage to the French King’s daughter, Elisabeth de Valois.
