Description

[CARROLL, LEWIS]--DODGSON, CHARLES LUTWIDGE

Autograph letter signed ("Charles L. Dodgson") to the Steward of Christ Church, Oxford [Robert Godfrey Faussett]

humorously praising "your new Orange Marmalade" and noting "it is not only delicious… but a sovereign specific for the complicated maladies to which I am a prey". Dodgson then lists an alphabetical list of "maladies" commencing "Asphyxia, Burns, Croup, Delirium…" and, inventing a family, notes "my wife and children use no other food. Its exquisitely harmonised composition does… honour to your Head and your Heart", 1 page, oblong 8vo, 22 April 1881, folds, some spotting, some tears and fraying

As Alice falls down the well in the first chapter of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, she "…took down a jar from one of the shelves as she passed; it was labeled ‘ORANGE MARMALADE’, but to her great disappointment it was empty…" Alice Liddell’s mother, Lorinda, supervised the manufacture of Christ Church College’s marmalade (and would later supply the recipe to Frank Cooper – still sold today).
