TURING'S COPY OF BURNSIDE'S KEY WORK THAT HELPED TO ESTABLISH GROUP THEORY AS A SUBJECT IN ITS OWN RIGHT. It is a book that Turing will have encountered during his studies at King's College, Cambridge, where his tutor - later a friend and colleague - was the eminent group theorist Philip Hall. Turing's first published paper, which appeared in 1935 and was written under Hall's influence, was a note advancing a recent theorem by von Neumann on group theory. This book later belonged to Philip Hall and was bequeathed to the current consignor at Hall's death. BOOKS OWNED BY TURING ARE RARE AT AUCTION.

PROVENANCE:
