Description

BEERBOHM, MAX

Hugh Cecil Lowther, fifth Earl of Lonsdale

315 x 192mm., pencil and watercolour drawing, signed and dated "Max 1921" lower left and titled "Deeply embedded in the esteem | and affection of the British | Public. | Lord Lonsdale" lower left and inscribed by the artist "Sir John Rothenstein | an ideal to be followed" lower right, mounted, framed and glazed

Lord Ancaster once described Lord Lonsdale (1857-1944) as "almost an Emperor and not quite a gentleman". With a reputation as "England's Greatest Sportsman", Lonsdale established the oldest championship belt in British professional boxing ("The Lord Lonsdale Challenge Belt") and was also a club director, honorary president and, briefly, chairman of Arsenal Football Club. Douglas Sutherland in his biography states "...his yellow carriages, his colourful entourage and his feudal style of living made him one of the best-known figures of his time. His big cigars, immaculate clothes and ever-fresh gardenia were the delight of cartoonists".
