Mark Grotjahn is arguably best known for his Butterfly series, in which he draws on Renaissance perspectival techniques for the structures of his vanishing-point patterns, as well as his Face Paintings, which are large-scale and heavily-process paintings emphasizing the simple geometric structures of eyes, nose, and mouth. In these works, Grotjahn plays with conceptions of infinity, perfection, and repetition. Angry Flower (Big Nose, Baby Moose), meanwhile, provides a unique opportunity to own an early work by this internationally acclaimed artist. The present work demonstrates Grotjahn’s experimental oeuvre at this point in his career, in which his personal language had not yet been fully formed. He employs a variety of medium in the creation of this work, as he continues to do today. Grotjahn is represented by Gagosian gallery, and his solo exhibition 50 Kitchens was on view last year at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles.
