Arabic and Persian manuscript on paper, 391 leaves plus 1 fly-leaf, 18 lines to the page written in black naskh or red nasta’liq, ruled in blue, red and gold, titles in gold thuluth within polychrome and gold cartouches, occasional words marking the division in red ink in the margins, illuminated frontispiece decorated with finely interlacing scrolls against a gold ground, in a contemporaneous lacquer binding decorated with a central medallion with flowers against a scrolling ground

Muhammad Baqir ibn Muhammad Taqi Majlisi was born in 1627 and was Shaykh al-Islam during the reign of Safavid Shah Suleyman (r.1666-94). The Zad al-ma’ad is a book of prayers and pious observances for ordinary and special days throughout the year.
