AN ILLUMINATED MINIATURE QUR’AN, TURKEY, OTTOMAN, 16TH CENTURY


Arabic manuscript on paper, 386 leaves plus 4 fly-leaves, 16 lines to the page, written in naskh in black ink, ruled in black and gold, verses separated by red dots, surah headings in black rounded cursive against a gold ground, gold and polychrome verse markers in the margins, f.1b and f.2a with a double-page illuminated frontispiece, f.2b and f.3a with a polychrome and gold frame, in brown gilt binding, with flap


5.5 by 3.7cm.

Please note that contrary to the printed catalogue this Qu'ran is written by two hands.

The high quality of the illumination throughout recalls the opening page of a Qur’an dated 930 AH/1524 AD now in the Istanbul University library, inv. no.A.6566, published in Derman 2010, p.40, as well as a Qur’an dated 954 AH/1547-48 AD, sold in these rooms, 24 October 2018, lot 23.
